Your eligibilityIRMAA Appeal — Frequently Asked Questions
- Social Security recognizes eight qualifying life-changing events: retirement or reduced work hours, marriage, divorce or annulment, death of a spouse, loss of income-producing property, loss of pension income, employer settlement payment, and reduction or cessation of certain income. If you experienced any of these, you may request that Medicare use a more recent year's income.
- You file SSA Form SSA-44 (Medicare Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount — Life-Changing Event) with your local Social Security Administration office. You can download the form at ssa.gov/forms/ssa-44.pdf.
- SSA typically processes IRMAA reconsiderations within 30 to 90 days. You should continue paying your current premiums during the review. If approved, SSA will adjust your premium going forward and may issue a refund for overpaid amounts.
- You can request an IRMAA reconsideration at any time if you experienced a qualifying life-changing event. There is no strict deadline, but it is best to file promptly — ideally within the calendar year the higher premium applies.
- Documents vary by event type. For retirement: a signed letter from your employer or a copy of your final pay stub showing the retirement date. For death of a spouse: a copy of the death certificate. For divorce: a copy of the divorce decree. For reduced income: documentation showing the income change such as a benefits termination letter or amended tax return.
- Yes — retirement is one of the most common qualifying events. If you retired this year and your current income is lower than the income Medicare used to set your premium (from two years ago), you can file SSA Form SSA-44 requesting that Social Security use your estimated current-year income instead.
